Halal Certified or Just Muslim-Friendly? What to Check Before Booking a Caterer
Almost every caterer in Malaysia will tell you their food is halal. Far fewer can show you a certificate.
The difference is not a matter of wording. One is a claim a business makes about itself. Halal certified catering has been audited by an external body, and sits on a public register you can check in two minutes.
Two different claims, often used interchangeably
Claim | What it actually means |
Muslim-friendly | A self-declared position. No external body has verified it and no audit has taken place |
JAKIM certified | Audited and certified by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia, verifiable on a public register |
Only the second is a certification. The first is a description a business applies to itself.
This matters because certification in Malaysia is voluntary for most food businesses. A caterer can operate perfectly legally without it.
What halal certified catering actually demands
JAKIM certification is not a logo you apply for and receive. It covers the whole operation.
Every ingredient. All raw materials must be halal or sourced from JAKIM-recognised suppliers, each verifiable. One uncertified ingredient can hold up an entire application.
The premises. Certification is premise-specific. A certified kitchen in one location does not certify a second kitchen elsewhere.
The people. Staffing requirements form part of the standard, which is a really important aspect of getting certified as well.
Ongoing audits. Certificates run for two years and renewal must be filed at least three months before expiry. JAKIM also conducts surveillance audits in between, so standards have to hold every day, not just on inspection day.
Why some caterers never apply
It is worth understanding why an uncertified caterer stayed uncertified, because the reason is usually not what people assume.
For most, it is simply hard. Certification means auditing every ingredient and every supplier, meeting premises and staffing requirements, and then holding that standard through surveillance audits for as long as the certificate runs. For a small kitchen running on thin margins, that is a significant commitment of time and money before a single extra booking comes in.
So many choose to describe themselves as Muslim-friendly instead. That is not necessarily dishonest. Plenty of uncertified kitchens are careful about what they buy and how they cook. But careful is a private intention, and certification is a public, checkable record — and when you are feeding two hundred guests, you need the second one.
It also explains what certification tells you beyond the food itself. A caterer who has been through the process has documented their supply chain, trained their staff and accepted outside inspection as a condition of doing business. That discipline rarely stops at the halal requirements.
Check it yourself in two minutes
You do not have to take anyone's word for it. JAKIM maintains a public register.
- Go to the Malaysia Halal Portal at myehalal.halal.gov.my
- Search the company name
- Check the certificate is current and covers the right premises
JAKIM actively encourages the public to verify status this way, and has publicly corrected the record on well-known chains that were assumed to be certified but were not. You may find Teaffani Catering under the Malaysia Halal Portal (JAKIM.700-2/3/2 092-03/2014).
FAQ
Is Muslim-friendly the same as halal certified?
No. Muslim-friendly is a self-declared description with no external verification. Halal certified means JAKIM has audited the operation and issued a certificate you can look up.
How do I check if a caterer is halal certified?
Search the company name on the Malaysia Halal Portal at myehalal.halal.gov.my, and confirm the certificate is current.
Is halal certification compulsory in Malaysia?
Not for most food businesses. It is voluntary, which is exactly why verifying matters.
