Catering in KL: where to start

The Klang Valley has hundreds of caterers, and a search for catering in KL rarely tells you which of them can actually handle your event. A company that is excellent for a 40-pax office lunch may not be equipped for a 1,500-guest annual dinner, and that difference usually only becomes visible on the day itself.

This guide covers what corporate catering involves, how to compare food catering services, what catering in KL costs, and how far ahead you need to book.

What corporate catering actually covers

Corporate catering is a broader category than most people assume. It spans office lunches and seminar refreshments at the small end, through product launches, conferences and townhalls, up to annual dinners for several thousand guests.

Some caterers also handle daily meal supply to offices, schools and clubhouses.

What separates corporate catering from private events is rarely the food. It is the paperwork and the logistics around it: building loading bay permits, security clearance, fixed start times that cannot drift, corporate invoicing with SST, and purchase order terms. A caterer who regularly works KL office towers and convention centres will have handled all of this before.

How to choose food catering services

Four things are worth checking before you shortlist any food catering services in the Klang Valley.

Proven capacity at your size. Ask how many events of your guest count they ran last year. A caterer comfortable at 2,000 pax has different kitchen capacity, vehicles and manpower than one whose ceiling is 200.

A named person in charge. You want one account manager through planning and one supervisor on site, with a contact number given to you before the event day.

Halal certification. Some food caterers are halal-certified, including Teaffani Catering. Ask for the JAKIM certificate number if you require verification.

Equipment and manpower. Confirm what is included and what is rented, and how many service staff come with your headcount.

What catering in KL costs, and when to book

Packed food and bento start from around RM10 per pax. International buffet sets typically run RM38 to RM68 per pax with a 50-pax minimum. Banquet, plated and canapé menus are quoted per event, since manpower and setup drive the cost as much as the food does.

Two cost factors catch people out. Public holidays and their eves carry a surcharge — commonly 20% on food and double on manpower. And venues well outside the Klang Valley usually attract a minimum spend, because a kitchen team and three vehicles travelling two hours is a different operation from a delivery in Shah Alam.

On timing: seven working days is a realistic minimum for a straightforward booking, but that is a floor, not a plan. If you want a food tasting, allow two months. Peak periods — year-end corporate season, Raya, Chinese New Year — book out far earlier, and the good dates go first.

Food catering service formats

The format shapes the room as much as the menu does. Match it to how formal the occasion is and whether you want guests seated or moving.

Getting a quote

Whichever caterer you approach, give them four things and you will get a useful quote rather than a generic price list: your event date, the venue, your guest count, and a rough budget per head.

Teaffani Catering is a JAKIM-certified halal caterer operating from Glenmarie, Shah Alam since 2011, running around 1,800 events a year across Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Subang and Klang, for gatherings from 20 guests to 10,000. Send us your event details on WhatsApp or the quote form and we will come back with menu options built around them.
